Hey Dudes! How's it going???
Well, I finally unpacked enough and got rested up enough to want to go out and fly again. Last time I flew really was the last time I flew with you guys, a little over a month ago. I was really curious how different it would be to fly here.
Well, I flew yesterday. I haven't joined the club here yet. I don't have any particular reason for it, I just hadn't gotten around to it. I was taking sort of a short break. But my father was here from Colorado this weekend and wanted to see me fly.
We found a large field next to some radio antennas, and I did a range check just to make sure there wasn't any interference on the 72 MHz band. It was fine, so off I went, into the wild blue yonder.
The air is certainly thicker here. The plane flies a bit better as there is more molecules of atmosphere around the surfaces. I would describe it as more forgiving and much more controlled, than the high altitude of Taos. I kept the flight short because the wind picked up to about 20 mph and it was kind of pushing around my Easy Star. I had to crab a lot to go in any particular intended direction. With a tailfeather plane, you can't crab as well as you can with ailerons (which would keep the wings level).
So when I decided to land, I had it coming towards me into the wind on a perfect approach. It was flying sideways too, so it was on a direct collision course with ME! When it got close to me, I just ducked and it flew right over my body, then turned around and landed it behind me in a perfect grass landing. That was a thrill.
It was also progress, because I've never been that good at landing it close to me. Out here, we have to be wary of snakes in the grass, literally. So I did not want to have to venture way out into a field of tall grass to retrieve my plane.
Old reliable still flies awesome.
How are you guys doing? Anybody care to post?
